From cowboys to outsiders
A lecture with journalist and author Ted Conover.
In the San Luis Valley in Colorado, you can buy a plot of land for less than 5,000 dollars.
There is hardly any electricity or other infrastructure there, and the natural environment is anything but hospitable. Winters are freezing cold, summers are scorching hot, and strong winds whip up large amounts of sand. Yet people are drawn here to live a life on the margins of society.
Author Ted Conover spent several years in this beautiful, rugged landscape. He lived, worked, and interacted with the local residents. The result was the critically acclaimed book Cheap Land Colorado: Off-Gridders at America’s Edge, which attempts to explain what happened to the American Dream.

About Conover
Conover is Professor Emeritus at the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute at New York University and the author of six nonfiction books. He is best known for Newjack: Guarding Sing Sing (2000), in which he went undercover as a correctional officer at the famous Sing Sing prison. Newjack was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and won the National Book Critics Circle Award for general nonfiction.

Writer and professor, Ted Conover has done just this. He spent years living and working on the outskirts of America, aiming to understand people's estrangements from the American Dream. The result was the critically acclaimed book Cheap Land Colorado: Off-Gridders at America’s Edge.
