Global Morning: Sexuality and Power in Nigeria
Sexuality is both private and political. In Nigeria, law, culture, and religion all play a role in regulating intimacy and people's love lives. In this Global Morning lecture, Dibia will explore the forces shaping attitudes toward sexuality in Nigeria, from colonial legacies to contemporary politics.
Dibia is the author of one of the first Nigerian novels with a gay main character, and his writing has received wide recognition. He has been shortlisted for awards including the Nigeria Prize for Literature, the Commonwealth Writers' Prize, and the Swedish Natur & Kultur Prize.
“Queer people were living, loving, suffering, surviving—but largely rendered invisible or spoken of in hushed tones, if at all. That silence felt violent. It felt like erasure” — The Guardian, 2025.
It is an honour to welcome Jude Dibia to Stavanger.
