HEKS – moving devilry at Rogaland Teater

HEKS – moving devilry at Rogaland Theatre

In HEKS we find ourselves at the beginning of the 1600s, the Reformation has been introduced, and in Denmark-Norway Christian IV rules with an iron fist. The king is in tune with the spirit of the age, and all over Europe the church, the kings and their men believe that the Devil is actively trying to create chaos and destroy God’s work and society. Women and wise women, especially those who managed on their own without men, were seen as easily influenced and easy prey for the Devil.

In Heks the women’s own stories are told, and through song and music we are also introduced to magical verses and rhymes taken from original sources, including Norwegian black books, Danish Cyprianus manuscripts and European grimoires. But who were these women, what devilish deeds were they accused of, and why must they be condemned?

Experience a different kind of history lesson that gives a voice to the witches themselves, and let yourself be spellbound by a seductive witch’s brew of music, beauty, rebellion, chaos and care. It will leave you enlightened, moved, challenged and entertained.

HEKS is performed at Rogaland Teater Tuesday–Saturday from 27 August to 24 October.
Please note that the performance starts at 18:00 on Saturdays.
