About the Abel Prize
The Abel Prize is an international prize, which is awarded annually by the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Letters (DNVA) on behalf of the Ministry of Education and Research. Lise Øvreås, President of DNVA, announces the winner of the 7.5 million kroner prize. The Academy's selection of the winner is based on the Abel Committee's recommendation.

The Abel Committee, which consists of five leading mathematicians from around the world, evaluates nominated candidates each year and recommends a worthy winner. The Abel Prize was established by the Storting in 2002, and is named after Niels Henrik Abel, Norway's greatest mathematician of all time.
