Have we lost our capacity to judge, decide and truly engage with the world ?

Join us for the Henrik Steffens Lecture 2026 with internationally acclaimed sociologist Hartmut Rosa, who argues that our lives are increasingly shaped by technology, algorithms, instructions and rules that quietly reshape how we act, feel and connect with others. According to Rosa, this shift away from genuine human discretion contributes to loneliness, burnout and social polarization and challenges our ability to be present in our own lives.

In his lecture "The Atrophy of Discreation - A Plea for Subversion", Rosa explores what it means to regain judgment, sensitivity and meaningful engagement in a world dominated by automatization and pre-set paths

Expect challenging ideas, fresh perspectives and an invitation to rethink how we interact with the world around us.

Thursday 12 February 2026, 18.30 - Elise Ottesen-Jensens hus, University of Stavanger.
