Unleashed – one of Swedish death metal’s “big four” – to Folken on March 21, 2026!

Since the late 1980s, Unleashed has been a central force in Swedish death metal. The band was founded by bassist Johnny Hedlund after his time in Nihilist, and quickly made a name for itself with the demos Revenge and Utter Dark in 1989. These led to a deal with Century Media and the debut album Where No Life Dwells in 1991, followed by extensive touring in Europe and the US. The follow-up Shadows in the Deep (1992) cemented the band’s position even further, with major tours and growing international attention.

Throughout the 1990s, Unleashed developed a distinct profile where Scandinavian history and Norse themes took on a larger role, notably on Across the Open Sea (1993). The band went through some lineup changes, but continued its artistic direction with albums like Victory (1995) and Warrior (1997).

From Hell’s Unleashed (2003) onwards, Unleashed delivered a steady run of albums that reinforced their status as one of the most important veterans of the genre, including Sworn Allegiance (2004), Midvinterblot (2006), Hammer Battalion (2008) and As Yggdrasil Trembles (2010). The later decades have solidified their role as part of the so‑called “Big Four” of Swedish death metal – together with Entombed, Dismember and Grave.

In 2025 the band returns with its fifteenth studio album Fire Upon Your Lands, released by Napalm Records. The album continues the story from No Sign of Life (2021) and firmly situates itself in the Odalheim universe that Hedlund and the band have built up over several releases. Fire Upon Your Lands consists of eleven tracks that combine the band’s established death metal sound with themes drawn from Norse mythology and tales of war. Songs like “Left for Dead”, “A Toast to the Fallen” and “War Comes Again” show a band that still cultivates its signature with powerful riffs, commanding vocals and a clear epic feel, while “To My Only Son” and “Hold Your Hammers High!” add more melodic and atmosphere‑driven dimensions.

With Fire Upon Your Lands, Unleashed demonstrates its continued relevance after more than three decades in the genre. The album combines raw energy with a cohesive concept and carries on the band’s distinctive blend of brutality, storytelling and tradition‑minded death metal.

Blodørn from Sauda is the support act. True Norwegian black metal with stories from the Viking Age’s harsh battles, journeys through forests and across mountains.
