Familiarize yourself with the fire instructions for your student accommodation

December is approaching - a month for candles, heat in the oven and Christmas lights. Unfortunately, December is also high season for house fires. Decorating for Christmas and increased use of heating appliances are for many part of the fun (and we agree!), but it also means that we have to be a little extra attentive. We therefore encourage everyone who lives in our student accommodations to familiarize themselves with the fire instructions for their accommodation. You can find these under "Fire and safety in the student housing" under each housing area. The instructions may vary, so make sure you familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to your residential area.

How to reduce the risk of fire in your student accommodation?

🕯️ If you want to decorate your apartment with candles, make sure that they are on a fire-proof surface, that there is a good distance between the lights, and that they are not near drafts. Also remember never to walk away from a candle - whoever lights it should be responsible for putting it out.
🎄 Avoid flammable decorations. A bow around the candle looks nice, but is also highly flammable. Materials such as pine cones, moss and other dry natural materials also catch fire easily.
💡 Turn off indoor lighting before you go to bed or before you leave. The lamps can become hot, which increases the likelihood of things nearby catching fire.
🌟 Check your Christmas lights. There must be no damage to the wires, the plug or around the light bulbs. The light bulbs should also be replaced if the light is uneven, or if they get too hot (which can happen with old light bulbs).
📱 Check that nothing is charging before you go to bed - this also applies to mobile phones.
🧼 Make sure that various appliances such as stoves, washing machines and dishwashers are switched off.
🍳 Use a kitchen fan when cooking. Also make sure to turn off the stove when you're done and that the stove tops are kept clean.
